A syndicate that specializes in the stealing of electric service wires from residential buildings now operates in Ibadan, Nigeria. The criminal group comprising some unscrupulous elements in the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) co-opted financially indisposed individuals to give out vital information that would be of mutual benefit. On Tuesday, 17 December, 2024, between 2:45 pm and 3:10 pm in the afternoon, a marketer and a technician, both workers of the IBEDC, stole the four service wires that supply electricity to the four apartments at No. 3 Kehinde Aderibigbe Street, Olorunsogo, Molete. The First Republic in Nigeria

In the first republic, from 1st October, 1960 to 15th January, 1966, Dr. Nnamid Azikiwe was the President while Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was the Prime Minister.

During this era, a national census was conducted, but the results were fraught with irregularities, just as Nigerians expressed dissatisfaction with the process.

This among other issues snowballed into major challenges for the country.

Corruption among the political office holders was the order of the day and rivalry to gain upper hand characterized the activities of the political class.

The federal elections of 1964 was anything but free and fair, even as the National Councilof Nigeria and Cameroons(NCNC) and the Action Group(AG) declined to participated in the elections in some parts of the country.

In the midst of growing distrust and suspicion, the outcome of the election created a constitutional crisis between the President and the Prime Minister.

Indeed, a cross section of the  political class today, may have a benefit of hindsight by experience or knowledge through literature, to realize that the present situation calls for great caution and a high sense of responsibility and accountability. Perhaps, considering the worrisome rate of corruption in all spheres of life in the country today.
