Between Wool and Crude Oil

Image
Woolen manufacture was England’s most prominent industry in 1750,while crude oil has been Nigeria’s major income earner for several years.  Stakeholders in the wool industry were based in the West Riding of Yorkshire, here cloths of medium quality were made, In East Anglia, here coarser fustian were produced and in South west of England, where fine and good quality cloth was made. Woolen cloth was a major export product and as a result the industry was closely regulated. Production was still in the hands of small masters in the West Riding and East Anglia. The export price of cloth was fixed as far back as the 10th century, and extraordinary steps were taken to disallow the export of the raw wool. As the market for woolen cloth expanded, the ownership of capital and the control of credit gained prominence. The cottage workers were financially incapable of purchasing large quantity of raw materials neither could they afford to sell the finished product on creditor source for mark...

Image
The socio-political and economic situation in Nigeria has brought several lessons to the fore in governance. In this interview, the Chief Executive Officer(C.E.O) of Tanimowo Foundation, Dr. Tanimowo Pelumi advises young Nigerians to learn a vocation alongside education.  Excerpts: What prompted you to establish the foundation? I was brought up in a very difficult environment, it was not easy, so when I was growing up, the surrounding hardships inspired me to establish the foundation. There was nobody to help. I started off by organizing seminars in my community. Later on, I forayed into real estate. This is the profession that gave me funds. What is your foundation about? It is all about agriculture. We empower people. We give out free chickens and fish. My aim is to eradicate poverty in society, especially Nigeria. My foundation has empowered people in so many towns and cities in the South West geopolitical zone. We have impacted positively on several lives. Do you have an...

Inflation and Others-Signs of a Faulty Leadership-Comrade Emelieze

Image
The strangulating inflation, prohibitive prices of goods and services and the poor performance of the Naira in the exchange market are all signposts of a faulty leadership foisted on Nigerians. This assertion was made by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''The inflation in the country has brought about untold hardships, sufferings and difficulties for millions of Nigerians, coupled with the poor showing of the Naira in the exchange market. All these are credible indicators that faulty leadership has been foisted on Nigerians and the World Bank knows this fact and is utilizing it to the fullest. It is very glaring in all sectors of the economy,''Comrade Emelieze stated.

Image

This assertion was made by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''The recent revelation by the National Security Adviser is very credible and serves as a pointer to what Nigerians should expect from the present government in the next four years even though it may not meet their expectations,'' Comrade Emelieze stated. Mallma Ribadu had disclosed that the present administration was contending with very serious budget constraints and confessed that they inherited a bankrupt country. He stressed that at present the government was taking care of the debts of the immediate past administration.

Image
Take interest in your health and wellness   As lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly take delivery of their brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV), millions of Nigerians have become despondent.  This assertion was made by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''Our lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives are already taking delivery of their brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV), the unemployment rate is on the increase, fuel queues have resurfaced, the costs of foodstuffs have gone beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians, the difficulties and hardships have become unbearable, Nigerians have become despondent'', Comrade Emelieze lamented.

It has been 100 days of torture and hardships for Nigerians-Comrade Emelieze

Image
The 100 days of the present administration in Nigeria have been described as a period of torture, difficulties and hardships. This is the submission of a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC) Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''The first 100 days of this administration have been 100 days of torture, difficulties, hardships, sorrows and lamentations for Nigerians. The administration should come out with distinct and clear-cut policies that will take the country out of the deep pit it now finds itself.'' ''Nigerians are yet to feel the impact of the so-called distribution of palliatives in the states because of the dubious ways these palliatives were shared among those who know themselves. Almost nothing got to the majority of impoverished Nigerians,'' Comrade Emelieze declared.

The need for Alternative means of Transportation

Image
Th e absence of an effective transport system in several states of Nigeria has left Nigerians to the mercy of dubious transporters. These transporters who are guided by the action and inaction of certain states Governments, have become law onto themselves. Commuters across the federation go through great difficulties and harrowing experiences before reaching their various destinations daily. This is as a result of not only the prohibitive transport fares but also the infiltration of the transport system by criminals. In some states of the federation, tricycle operators and commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as okada riders, have for some time now, being having a field day exploiting helpless commuters for their benefit and that of the Government. The insinuation is that the affected states covertly sanction the activities of the criminals who have infiltrated the transport system. However, it is worrisome to note that some state Governments have obstinately rejected t...

The Privatization of the Power Sector

Image
For the past seven years, the present administration in Nigeria has failed to provide the right impact and confidence in the minds of foreign investors. An assessment and evaluation of the business environment reveal little or no progress has been made. It is not in contention that with regular electricity supply, the successful implementation of an impressive business economic blueprint will remain a mirage. Following the collapse of the National Grid three times in four weeks, the power supply problem seems to be beyond this administration. The absence of a constant power supply has almost crippled all sectors of the economy coupled with the prohibitive cost of diesel. Nigerians are now asking very pertinent questions. How many megawatts of electricity did this administration meet when it assumed office in 2015? How many of the power generation stations are functional presently? Without a doubt, the privatization of the power sector has not brought any form of relief for Nigerians ...

The Necessity for Change

Image
The function of a government goes beyond ensuring law and order, the arrangements to permit change must be functional. Change must revolve around consent and permission from the people. In several climes, the toleration of criticisms by governments attracted peaceful change and those who had visible potentials to partake in government are brought on board. But sadly, the fact that legislative chambers at the Federal and a number of states did not meet the minimum constitutionally stipulated sitting requirements in the outgone year is a great setback. Indeed, there is no ideal government for all places and there is no ideal for all times. The security situation across Nigeria, the attitude of security and law enforcement personnel, and government go beyond scratching the surface. When Government does not change promptly with the situation, the people become a major part of the challenges confronting the government. The experience of France at the end of the 18th century and Russia...

Comatose Economy

Image
The development of infrastructure in Nigeria has over the years been unsuccessful due to the fact that the country is not an infrastructure-conscious space. In infrastructure development, the quality of the people is crucial,-initiative, prudence, ingenuity and foresight, all combined to guarantee a nation’s development. Indiscriminate taxation would definitely have negative effects on the psyche of the people and certainly not an incentive for higher productivity. A close and critical observation of the Nigerian economy exposes the inexperience, ignorance, mediocrity and docility of Those-in-Charge. The trial and error policies of government has only worsened the coma state of the economy, regardless of the injury time shuttles abroad by government officials to attract foreign investments. The Nigerian economy today, is a patient well over due for surgery.

The People's Opinion

Image
Government policies revolving around austerity measures, unemployment, stagnant salaries, rising prices of essentials, indiscriminate and multiple taxation among others are all reflections of the extent to which Those-in-Charge are now unpopular. Several people unfriendly policies have successfully rubbished governance. Sadly, officials of the administration have so far been unable to convincingly explain and defend the administration’s actions and policies that have brought about excruciating hardships on the people. Regardless of the poor state of the economy, Those-in-Charge have continued to borrow and spend without recourse to saving. A bad democracy is not good merely because it is a democracy; and any form of government that is not a democracy is bad, for uncontrolled power invariably corrupts those who possess it. They are not always right, but Those-in-Charge have sacrificed national interest as they see it in order to obtain a present political party advantage. The im...
