We are Heavily taxed by the government-Federal workers

Image
Workers in Nigeria have raised alarm over the unfair taxation of their monthly salaries by the federal and state governments. The workers under the aegis of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) raised this alarm in a letter titled PROTEST AGAINST EXPLOITATION OF WORKERS BY THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT, THE COMPROMISE OF LABOR UNIONS, AND NOTIFICATIONS FOR INDEFINITE PROTEST FROM 22ND APRIL 2025 BY FEDERAL WORKERS, addressed to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and signed by the National Coordinator (FWF), Comrade Andrew Emelieze, and Secretary General, Comrade Itoro Obong. "Federal workers" salaries and ALLOWANCES are equally heavily taxed, and no tax rebate or certificate is issued to the workers at the end of the year. Despite the poor national minimum wage, the federal government in Nigeria has continued to owe federal workers lots of arrears of allowances, promotion arrears, hazard allowances, duty tour allowance (DTA), etc. This we have seen leading to agitations amon...

Violent Crimes-The Position of Spectators

The consensus among Nigerians is that the arms build-up in different parts of the country has its background woven around the aspirations of actors in the socio-political scene in the land. The arms build-up festers side by side with poverty, hunger, and brigandage, while the land has over time become fertile for trading in illegal arms with evil deeds as the major focus. Indeed, state actors are familiar with the negative effects of injustice, inequality, nepotism, and favoritism, but are, sadly, handicapped by self-centered interests and incurable greed. Interestingly, the competition for power and privilege has resulted in the loss of precious lives and the wanton destruction of the properties of innocent and harmless citizens.  The debate among Nigerians now is on what constitutes the major functions of state actors. The illegal influx of arms and ammunition has continued unabated through constitutional and unconstitutional channels with the active connivance of those wh...

Between Wool and Crude Oil

Image
Woolen manufacture was England’s most prominent industry in 1750,while crude oil has been Nigeria’s major income earner for several years.  Stakeholders in the wool industry were based in the West Riding of Yorkshire, here cloths of medium quality were made, In East Anglia, here coarser fustian were produced and in South west of England, where fine and good quality cloth was made. Woolen cloth was a major export product and as a result the industry was closely regulated. Production was still in the hands of small masters in the West Riding and East Anglia. The export price of cloth was fixed as far back as the 10th century, and extraordinary steps were taken to disallow the export of the raw wool. As the market for woolen cloth expanded, the ownership of capital and the control of credit gained prominence. The cottage workers were financially incapable of purchasing large quantity of raw materials neither could they afford to sell the finished product on creditor source for mark...

Pray ceaslessly for Hardships to End in 2023-Pastor Ajayi

Image
Nigerians have been charged with keeping hope alive by praying ceaselessly for the present hardships and violent crimes weighing the country down to come to an end in the new year. This charge was given by Pastor Opeyemi Ajayi. ''Nigerians should continue to pray ceaselessly for an end to the present hardships and spate of killings, ritual killings, armed robberies, rape and other violent crimes in the new year. The challenges Nigerians are passing through today will soon be over. It is a matter of time and at the end of it all we shall have cause to rejoice and be happy. Niggerians should be optimistic that the new year will bring good tidings,'' Pastor Ajayi stated. Similarly, labor leaders in Nigeria have been castigated for keeping mute in the face of the hardships being experienced, particularly by workers and generally by Nigerians. This castigation was given by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ...

Emerging Natural Factors

Image
In most countries around the world, the interest of an individual has never been greater than those of these countries. However, this is not the case in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa.Indeed, a political party that has attained political power, is at an advantage to address the fundamental national question revolving around equality and justice. Unfortunately, in Nigeria today, the political party in power is proud to have regional and ethnic alliances which have ensured a divided country. The rule of law is increasingly being rubbished on a daily basis while political and religious intolerance is now the culture and tradition. The unabating state of insecurity and the unending violence which has claimed several thousands of lives, suggests that the former and the latter have become means to various ends for Those in Authority. A political party ought to be a medium for the expression of the choice of the electorate and the avenue through which like-minded people may expr...

Sunset-The Farewell Days are Here

Image
From all possible indicators, the Government is either already helpless or deliberately playing out a well written script, as the pump price of the Petroleum Motor Spirit(PMS) gradually soars above the reach of disillusioned and impoverished Nigerians. Interestingly, a bottle of Kerosene now sells for 300.00 Naira and the attitude and performances of Government at the State and Local Government levels, have not in any way ameliorated the almost hopeless situation. It is very sad to come to terms with the fact that the 30, 000 Naira national minimum wage is nothing compared with the suffering occasioned by the Government facilitated economic hardships Nigerians are passing through. Indeed, a number of states take their workers for granted by ensuring prompt payment of salaries even though the national minimum wage is not yet in existence in the affected states. The Kano state Government is tinkering with the idea of reverting the workers' salaries to 18,000 Naira. This is a bad...

The Powers of Government

Image
The forceful acquisition of property(land and houses) is the trend in Nigeria presently. Those who act out this script are both in the public and private sectors and do not have regard for the contents of the law on ownership of property. Hiding under the cover of laughable policies, property of innocent citizens are annexed. Their greed and insatiable appetite for oppressing the people have overwhelmed the humanity in them. The Judiciary which is supposed to be the last resort of the common man, are co-travelers with those that call the shots at the Federal, States and Local Governments. The only hope for the people lies in divine intervention.

Democracy in the Claws of Dictatorship

Image
When the Government is desperate and resolute to cling to power, in the face of the unfavorable outcome of elections, election and the existence of political parties opposing the government do not constitute evidences of democracy. Indeed, a number of countries have the forms of democracy, but the reality of dictatorship. Without doubt there is a vital difference between democracy and dictatorship, however, it varies from one country to another. Notably, the Civil Service must be efficient and must render equally, good service without strings of partisanship, for the people to be reassured that they government they elected will carry out their wishes and at the same time fulfill promises made. Also rules and regulations exist to protect Civil Servants from the least suspicion of political bias;they are not allowed to present themselves for elective positions or partake in political activities. But unfortunately, this is not the case at all levels of government. Obviously, one of the ...

Save Face

Image
The major discussion among Nigerians in every part of the country revolves around the hunger and poverty in the land. The people continue to complain of the prohibitive cost of foodstuff in the markets, the absence of quality health care delivery, the high rate of unemployment, and the declining productivity of workers as a result of poor conditions of service. Under the present situation, real income is very low due to low productivity. The inducement to invest is also very low as a result of the low purchasing power of the people. What has the government done to ameliorate the situation? This question continues to linger. Foreign investors have continued to observe the trend, which is obviously not favorable and decide against sinking their money in unsafe waters. This in essence suggests that leadership at all levels of government now contend with ignorance, mediocrity, and the prominent lack of initiative to redeem the situation. In this situation, lies, deceit, threats, and oth...

Avoiding Succession Pitfalls

Image
William the Conqueror and Henry 1 of England were leaders whose authorities were to a large extent personal and not in any way attributable to the dynamic structure of the Government. Both of them had the extraordinary force of character with despotic tendencies. Interestingly, when Stephen, a man of feeble traits, succeeded Henry, civil war broke out. This was as a result of a succession dispute, which snowballed into a confusion of an unimaginable dimension culminating in the termination of the royal court. After the demise of Henry 1, the Government drifted into anarchy. However, the Royal court was restored and extended by Henry 11. Henry 11 was the son of Geoffery Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, and Eleanor of Aquitaine. His personality impressed those of his time, while his friends and enemies were of the consensus that he was a man of ways, means, and passions beyond the imagination of average men. Henry 11 had an eye for details of law and administration and indeed relished legal ...

Government Policies and its indebtedness

Image
Persons in authority in Nigeria have hinted that the re-introduction of toll gates is imminent while at the same time facilitating the increase in the fees payable for vehicle plate numbers and the driver's license. Before now, impoverished Nigerians have been contending with persistent darkness even though at present, electricity bills are strangulating. Indeed, the high costs of foodstuff in the markets, the upward review of the Value Added Tax(VAT), PremiumMotor Spirit(PMS), and Kerosene are solid proofs that governance is on an unstable footing at all levels. The ranking of Nigeria as fifth in the list of countries with high debt risk exposure only confirms that political office holders, both elected and appointed, have done almost nothing to reinvigorate the country's health system, eradicate hunger and poverty, create convincing and satisfactory employment, ensure the growth of businesses. The Debt Management Office(DMO)has stated that Nigeriahasadebt of $11.5 billion t...

Lesser Figures and History

Image
Nigeria presently operates a multi-party political system, but n emerging desire is for a single party to thrive in the country's political firmament, while arm twisting, blackmail, and intimidation are the applications for membership drive. Mao of China attained his goals through despotic means. He did not, however, terrorize citizens, but rather ensured that the downtrodden were lifted up in every sphere of human life. During Mao's reign, thousands of Chinese died of starvation and inhuman labor. And he justified this cruelty to humanity as the price that had to be paid for the re-education of the Chinese. The re-education also included the extermination of the heroes of the civil war and the old party chieftains. In Nigeria, state actors breach the constitution to achieve desired goals, even though the desired goals are not in tandem with the expectation of Nigerians. For the country not to follow the tragic history of old Yugoslavia, justice, equity, tolerance, and the ru...

Govt not sincere on Insecurity-Sen. Ladoja

Image
A former Oyo State Governor has called on the Federal Government to be responsive, responsible, and accountable to end the insecurity in the land. According to Sen. Rasidi Ladoja in interaction with Journalists led by the Chairman of the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Comrade Ademola Babalola, '' It doesn't seem that the Federal Government is sincere in fighting insecurity, maybe now they are waking up. You told us that you are for everybody and no one, but now you are for some people. Most of the time the President waits too much before he talks to Nigerians maybe he should talk to us more to reassure Nigerians that he means well,'' Sen. Ladoja concluded.   Facebook Twitter Email Pinterest Mo

The Transient Nature of Power

Image
State Actors have decided to fund the cattle ranching project in Katsina state with 6.25 Billion  Naira while simultaneously promoting discord and disunity in several other states through their insistence on the open grazing initiative. It is deliberate. However, the time is too short to implement and see to fruition all the contents of the script which includes 3 percent for oil-producing areas and 30 percent for the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) to explore crude oil in the non-oil producing areas. The desperation revolves around the realization that POWER is transient, nothing lasts forever and that Trust and accountability are no longer some of the key objectives of state actors.

Half Salaries in Ondo shall have a bandwagon Effect-Ex-Officio TUC

Image
The percentage payment of salaries to workers by the Ondo State Government shall have a bandwagon effect if it continues. This assertion was made by an Ex-Officio of the Oyo State Council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), who is also a former chairman of the union in the state, Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''The situation in Ondo state is very dangerous and it could have a bandwagon effect if allowed to fester. Workers are now left to the mercy of the Government suggesting that labor unions are asleep or no longer exist'', Comrade Emelieze stated.
