State Police will take Nigeria no where-Labor Leader

Image
The Federal Government has been advised not to tinker with the present law enforcement structure in Nigeria. This advice was given by the unit chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria(ASCSN) Federal Ministry of Labor, Oyo state unit, Comrade Paul Balogun. ''The issue of trying to use  decentralized police  to tackle the present insecurity in Nigeria will not take us anywhere. The problem on ground is local, the security challenges  presently is community based. So, therefore the solution on ground should also be locally or community based, Comrade Balogun stated.

Government is to blame for upsurge in Kidnappings-Comrade Emelieze

Image
Express Your Views on Insecurity in Nigeria Here The rise in the cases of kidnappings in Nigeria have been attributed to the inability of the government at all levels to emancipate the people economically. This is the position of a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''When the government at all levels are unable to empower Nigerians economically, those with criminal tendencies have embraced kidnappings as a source of income. The government should take urgent steps to reverse the trend and also the complicity of  security agents should be looked into,''Comrade Emelieze stated.

Lawyer engages thugs to serve letter in Ibadan

Image
In these challenging times, lawlessness and criminality continue to linger as those in charge pretend not to be aware. On Thursday 9th November 2023 at about 9.30 am in the morning at 3, Kehinde Aderibigbe Street, Olorunsogo, Molete, Ibadan, Oyo state, a lawyer with phone number-08053721344- alongside four thugs made an abortive attempt to serve a harmless citizen a letter in the midst of intimidation and threats from the thugs. However, the citizen bluntly refused to accept the letter. This development was trailed by unthinkable actions of four operatives of the Nigeria Legion Corps of Commissionaires, who supervised the damaging of the padlocks of the two gates to the house and the pulling down of the doors of three flats in the building and making away with all the locks, two chains, and padlocks. However, it is curious that the assailants opted to forcefully convey the only occupant of the building to the Iyaganku Central Police Station on a motorcycle after they conc...

Bolanle Raheem's Murder shows that our leaders are heartless-Labor Leader

Image
/> The gruesome murder of Bolanle Raheem by an Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) has been described as a reflection of the depraved mindset of those in government. This assertion was made by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''This kind of tragedy shows that those ruling Nigeria are heartless, wicked and do not value the lives of Nigerians. This is the kind of nightmare that Nigerians face daily at the hands of men and officers of the Nigeria Police Force. The police are doing the opposite of what they were recruited to do. Rather than protecting Nigerians, the police are on the streets, extorting, attacking and maiming innocent Nigerians. It is quite unfortunate, pathetic and very sorrowful that Mrs. Bolanle Raheem was killed in cold blood by a drunken police officer. We pray for the repose of her soul and also pray that God will give the family the fortitude to bear the great loss.''

The Quality of personnel and Insecurity

Image
A large number of law enforcement and security personnel have for long ignored their primary duites and rather become involved wioth happenings in the political sphere in Nigeria. The motivating factor revolves around money, influence and greed, even though the authorities are fully aware of this unfortunate development. Indeed, the chequered mindset of these set of professionals in uniform has resulted in a major set back in the unending battle to put a stop to insecurity in the land. Sadly, over the years, nepotism, favoritism and mediocrity have ensured that unqualified persons infiltrate the law enforcement and security servcies. This is reflected in the avoidable acts of commission and ommission in countless number of engagments whioch have defied all known procedures oif professional practice. Note- The non-state actors at the center of violnet crimes in Nigeria today are all products of those who are obssessed with power. Those-in-Power ought to have a recipe to end the crime...

The Rule of Law

Image
The survival of democracy depends to a great extent, on the just and efficient working of the courts of law. The people look up to these courts for reprieve against those who interfere with their rights. Through the declaration and application of law, the courts make public in provisions are not subject to the will of an arbitrary, Government, but rather to a known and accepted set of rules . In the present dispensation, the activities of the courts, when it comes to the dispensation of justice in civil and criminal matters, have not met the expectations of the people. The quality of an unspecified number of Magistrates and Justices, who perhaps leave most of the work to their clerks is a discredit to the system. The attitude, competence and integrity of judicial workers is also not a credit to the system. Sadly, the combination of the rule ‘’no wrong without remedy’’, with the Rule of Law, does not protect the citizen from unlawful imprisonment or other injury at the hands of G...

The Other Side of Safeguarding the Lives and Property of Nigerians

Image
In July 2005, the then Inspector General of Police Mr. Sunday Ehindero put in place committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the alleged killing of five Igbo traders and their female friend by some policemen at the Apo  mechanic village, Abuja on June 7 of the same year. However, the committee was  headed by, Mike Okiro, then a Deputy Inspector General  of Police was dissolved by the then President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. The President hinged his decision on the fact that the Police could not be a Judge in its own case. In addition, the President's action was predicated on the testimonies of a  photographer, hired by the Police in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) to take photographs of the lifeless bodies of the six Nigerians sent to their untimely graves.  The photographer confessed that the police were responsible for the crime, as he stated that he saw the police bring guns and placed  by the side of the cor...

Awards To Guarantee the Safety of Lives and Property

Recently the Police Community Relations Committee(PCRC) did an awards ceremony  in Ibadan- communities near the expressway-Iwo road expressway- that have been the subject of debate  for sometime now. Awards were given to individuals, who have over time assisted the Police Division, financially and materially, even though the crime rate in the community is on the increase. Indeed,  complaints handled by officers and men of the Police Division at Felele, have not been impressive, even though a one time Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro handed over to Musiliu Smith at the Police Service Commission. Sadly, owners of houses in communities, as a result of monetary considerations, deliberately refuse to thoroughly screen  prospective tenants before giving them accommodation and in the process, take in criminals. Of worry, is the increasing number of ''Ogogoro'' joints, beer parlours,  and hotels in residential areas, with government a...

The Travails of A Journalist In Olorunsogo, Molete, Ibadan Nigeria

Image
The Oyo state Police Command is determined to shield some of its personnel, who have for long worked hand-in-gloves with some members of the public to intimidate, threaten, attack, blackmail and terrorize the Editor-In-Chief of Federationews2day,  Solomon Adewunmi.   The officers and men attached to the Iyaganku Area Command and the Felele Police station, have always acted faceless residents of Olorunsogo, Molete, who remain solidly behind their actions. On two occasions, one of which was on Sunday, 25 May, 2008, Mrs. Koloko in connivance with the then Divisional Crime Officer(DCO) the Challenge Police station, Orita Challenge, facilitated the arrest of the journalist. While in the office of the DCO, the journalist was repeatedly threatened. In another plot against the journalist,a letter titled” A Petition Against Solomon Adewumi” and dated 20 November, 2008, was received by the Assistant Commissioner of Police(ACP), Iyaganku Area Command, Mrs. Abiodun Ig...

Corruption : Nigeria’s Laws Are For All And Sundry

Image
The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde has declared that Nigeria does not need its loan to give good health to the sickly economy. Rather, Lagarde recommended belt tightening measures to restore vibrancy and life to the economy. Lagarde also urges the Federal Government to be flexible in its foreign exchange policy. Indeed, the debt relief granted Nigeria by the Paris club during the tenure of former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, could be said to be the biggest debt write off for sub-Saharan Africa. $18 billion of debt written off. The Paris club agreed to write off Nigeria’s debt without an IMF economic programme. Of course, the country would not forget in a hurry, the harrowing experiences it had with the implementation of an IMF programme in the past, this is just as an idea of a national consensus for intensive reforms required to transform the ailing economy could not be woven around an IMF programme. The Nati...

2016 : Nigerians Are Eager To Safeguard Their Constitutional Rights

During the reign of President Milosevic of Old Yugoslavia, independent journalists were labelled traitors and foreign spies. Several; journalists were killed, put in jail or convicted in the law court. That particular period of Old Yugoslavia’s history, a clique ruled the country. Milosevic ensured that Serbs became the biggest pariah of the international community. The President also ensured that Serbs were guilty of everything, even as 23 per cent of Serbs were sent packing from their homes. Monthly salaries did not exceed $3. Indeed, the Judicial system was not independent and not strong enough to ensure justice for the citizenry. This resulted in Milosevic’s trial for war crimes outside his country. Sadly, the international community did not have confidence in the local courts. Situations like this abound in several countries around the world, still grappling with the hydra like problems of dwindling economic fortunes and corruption. In this countries, the un...

The different Tales Of The Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

Image
Travelers now spend almost the entire journey engaging in prayers for God’s protection while traveling in commercial vehicles and trucks along the Lagos\Ibadan expressway. They pray fervently not to be involved in  ghastly motor accidents that  have now characterized the expressway, among other tales of woe. Bashed vehicles, blood stains and personal belongings of accident victims littering the road, are now sign posts of the daily tragedy that occurs along the road. Not long ago, three occupants of a sleek new model black Honda Accord car with Lagos registration number had a collision with a truck. The car somersaulted several times before coming to a halt, while a middle aged man, clad in brown native attire survived the accident with serious bruises, the other two occupants,a lady and another man died instantly. On the same day,at another spot along the road, some hundreds of meters to Ogere,a town along the expressway, two towing trucks made spirited e...
