Foisting the Unpopular on the People

Image
Indigenes and residents of Kano state in Nigeria are very conversant with their choice of leadership and are not only bothered by the turn of events, but are also interested in knowing if DEMOCRACY is still on course.    Any leadership that manipulates the people's choice will, in due course, take in more than it can chew.  Indeed, foisting unpopular choices on the people could result in undemocratic acts of omission and commission.

As the General Elections Approaches

Image
Nigerians are hopeful that the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) will justify the mind-boggling money the Federal Government set aside for the successful conduct of the general elections. This will become a reality if the elections are free, fair and credible. However, the violent crimes occurring on a daily basis in different parts of Nigeria is a major threat to the smooth conduct of the elections. Of worry, is the safety of lives and property. For example, the high prices of consumables and essential commodities coupled with the prohibitive prices of petroleum products has made life unbearable for millions of Nigerians. The result is the hunger, poverty and high unemployment rate in the ...

INEC-Overcoming the Tests of Integrity Credibility and Transparency

Image
The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) has long before the present challenges, established its Information Technology Department(ICT) for the efficient and uncompromising deployment of Information Technology tools in the electoral process. In addition, the computerization of the voters' register has been accomplished, while the transmission of election results by VSAT, and HF Radio and posted results on the Commission's website as the vote counts to be recorded on the field, has equally been achieved. However, the compostion of this constitutionally important organization ought to include socially mature and distinguished indivudauls who have trakc records of meritorious service in the public or private sector. But, sadly, this may not be the case presently. Furthermore, employees of the INEC are supposed to be of sound mind and ought to possess the mental balance to function effectively in the organization.
