Give Nigerians Palliatives to Cushion sufferings-Labor Leader

Image
The government at all levels have been called upon to introduce palliatives that will cushion the effects of the sufferings and hardships currently being experienced by millions of Nigerians. This call was made by the deputy chairperson of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria(ASCSN)Public Complaints Commission(PCC) unit, Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, Mrs. Omotayo Adebanjo-Adesida. ''The Federal Government has tried to do harmonization of salaries, it. It will boost the morale of workers, but I think the government at all levels should introduce palliatives for workers and Nigerians in general, such as staff buses, low-cost housing and controlling the prices of goods and services in the market,m so that it will enable Nigerians on enjoy a good life.'' She maintained that workers in the country had every reason to celebrate workers' day, saying ''for the fact that we are alive, we have to thank God for the gift of life. In addition, because of th...

Rest on the Lord

Image
In the time of distress, rest on the Lord, and He will restore peace to your soul. PSALM 142 1(Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave.) I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication. 2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble. 3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. 4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. 5 I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living. 6 Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I. 7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

The Disturbing Absence of Demographic Planning in Nigeria

Image
The acceptability of the National Population Census result in Nigeria has been a subject of controversy and debate since independence. The first census in 1962 was cancelled as a result of allegations and counter allegations of over-counting in several geographical locations in the country. The figures were rejected by the Eastern and Mid-Western regions based on their arguments that the figures for the Northern region were inflated. The result was 29.8 million for the North, 10.3 million for the West, 12.4 million for the East and 2.5 million for the Mid-West. Another census held in 1973, by General Yakubu Gowon-led military government fixed Nigeria's population at 79.758 million. Controversy trailed the result and it was eventually cancelled by the Murtala Muhammed-led military government in 1975. However, in 1988, the National Population Commission(NPC) was established, but failed to minimize the controversies revolving around the result of the census. In 1991, the military g...

Shun Evil Practices-Cleric

Image
Nigerians have been advised to shun evil practices as the nation approaches a new dawn. This advice was given by a Christian cleric, Pastor Opeyemi Ajayi. ''I wish to call the attention of Nigerians to the rising cases of the propagation of evil and diabolism. We should shun all these satanic acts as we approach the light at the end of the tunnel, Pastor Ajayi counseled. In recent times, pedophilia, sodomy, homosexulity and other evil acts have been on the increase in different parts of the country.

Workers in Nigeria express worries over unresolved issues

Workers in several states in Nigeria have expressed worries over the unresolved issues surrounding the national minimum wage, contributory pension scheme and other related challenges. Their woorise is further heigthened by the prolonged slience of labor leaders in the face of increasing challenges confronintg workers in the affected states as a result of the unresolved issues. Sadly, some labor unions benefited cash financially from state governments and politically exposed people in the just concluded general elections in exchange for electoral support. In a related development, the chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union and Associated Institutions(NASU), University College Hospital(UCH) branch, Ibadan, Nigeria, Comrade Kehinde Abiona has called on the members of the union to remain calm as the union awaits a new date for elections from its national headquarters. ''Presently, the branch is waiting for the directive of the national headquarters of the union on the new date f...

Self Interests in the face of Anger in the Land

Image
Political dissatisfaction and social discontent are major characteristics of living in Nigeria today. The problems of nationhood revolving around power sharing have brought about perpetual anger in the land. Interestingly, the economic reforms of the outgoing administration have violated the country's constitution-Section 15(3) of the 1999 constitution, which states that the government must promote a balanced economy and that the government must not allow the resources of the country to be in a few hands of individuals or groups. Sadly, all the institutions that ought to sustain democracy-the Judiciary, the Legislature, the Police and the political class are already vigorously undermining it. The silence and inertia of a number of state governors, occasioned by self-interest, have not helped matters in the face of bizarre acts and conduct that have left Nigerians amazed, helpless and dumbfounded. An Unambiguous Description The scenario in Adamawa state, before, during and after ...

Build a Life with Lasting Value

Image
Let us build our lives on Jesus Christ, the solid foundation of good works, obedience and faith, so that our lives will have a lasting value. 1 Corinthians 3 : 9-23 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be save...

Our God Protects Us

Image
Our God protects us all the time-in the day and in the night. Psalm 121 (A Song of degrees.) I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

When Nation Building takes the Back Seat

Image
Nigerians will soon heave a sigh of relief, after eight years of tortuous regulation of their behaviors by those in power today. Indeed, participation in the decision making process during this period is a true reflection of democracy. Sadly, additional organizations have been established to further regulate the behavior of Nigerians and in the process ''dehydrate'' them financially. Political and career appointments in this administration exposed the fact that Nigeria is not a balanced federation revolving around the principles of justice, equity and fairness. The insensitive leadership facilitated the entrenchment of economic stagnation at all levels of government; closely followed by the political mariginalization of the other geo-political zones. Indeed, the policies of the apex people's unfriendly policies of the apex bank in the country, have overshadowed the loyalty and commitment of Nigerians to nation building. The Twilight Days It is so sad that in the t...

Population Census-Why Now?-Asks Former Oyo TUC chairman

Image
Nigerians ought to question the motive behind the Federal Government's resolve to conduct the National Population Census four weeks to the expiration of its tenure. This assertion was made on Monday by a former chairman of the Oyo state council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''Nigerians are supposed to question the Federal Government's decision to conduct the National Population Census a month before its exit. One is afraid that there is a hidden and sinister motive behind this decision at the tail end of this administration. Why now?'' Comrade Emelize asked.

The Cosmetic Process of Democracy

Image
The deepening sufferings and hadrships in Nigeria are a fall out of the greed, self-centered intents and the lack of know how of those opportuned to be controllers at every level of government. Desolation of the polity has set in, with political entrepreneurs maintaining their beneficiary status, even though the outlook is very bleak. Sadly, those who Nigerians eexpect to keep Those-in-Auhority on their toes, have over-timme, contributed positively to the anti-people policies of the government under the cover of darkness. Indeed, their public statements and declarations are bereft of sincerity and sensitivity. Not surprisingly, the masses no longer rely on the labor movement, which in the past was the last resort of defence against evil. It was not until the tail end of the Naira scarcity imbroglio, that labor decided to wake up to its deep slumber by acting out a written script. Events in Nigeria(unfolding) have proven and will prove that the peace and unity of any country revolves...

Salvation

Image
Although keeping the 120 commandments is imperative, salvation comes from putting our trust in JESUS CHRIST, our LORD AND SAVIOR. Romans 8 : 1-21 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So...
