The Powers of Government

Image
The forceful acquisition of property(land and houses) is the trend in Nigeria presently. Those who act out this script are both in the public and private sectors and do not have regard for the contents of the law on ownership of property. Hiding under the cover of laughable policies, property of innocent citizens are annexed. Their greed and insatiable appetite for oppressing the people have overwhelmed the humanity in them. The Judiciary which is supposed to be the last resort of the common man, are co-travelers with those that call the shots at the Federal, States and Local Governments. The only hope for the people lies in divine intervention.

The Impact of Primary Health Care in the Grassroots

Image
Public health requires both preventive and curative measures. Preventive measures ensures cleanliness and sanitation, the provision, most especially, in the formative years of childhood, the care and feeding which strengthens the body's resistance against diseases. This is in addition to curative measures that facilitates treatment from diseases. The Health departments of Local Governments have been found wanting as regards the above mentioned, even though there are regular advancements in social conscience and medical knowledge. The unavailability of supply of potable water in several communities in Local Governments is a major challenge. Residents resort to doubtful sources to meet their water needs. Constructed boreholes are yet to meet the expectations of the people. Most communities are dirty and unkempt as a result of the docile nature of Local Government workers. Refuse are dumped indiscriminately and everyone carry on as if all is well. Children and expectant Mothers have...

The Grassroots and Government

Image
The importance of the Local Government revolves around the need to attend to the expectations and welfare of the people at the grassroots. In addition, the Local Government plays a vital role in Federal schemes of education, housing, transport among others, nationwide. It adopts the mainline of policy to local conditions. Sadly, the Local Government, under the present dispensation in Nigeria, is not independent. Interestingly, a number of Chairmen and Councillors elected from their neighborhoods, now focus on recruiting cultists and other categories of criminals to intimidate, terrorize and attack residents of several communities, as social services continue to remain a mirage. Indeed, these elected officials are not known by the vast majority of the populace at the grassroots, while development is only on the pages of newspapers and speakers of radios. Curiously, the character of growth to meet the needs of the poverty-stricken people come with lies, half-truths, and promises, ev...

Hunger and Poverty in Nigeria is Massive-Ex-Officio TUC

Image
The unabating hunger and poverty in Nigeria is massive and worrisome as Nigerians continue to raise their voices. This assertion was amde by an Ex-Officio of the Oyo state Council of the Trade Union Congress(TUC), who is also a former Chairman of the uion in the state, Comrade Andrew Emelieze. ''There is massive hunger and poverty in Nigeria. This is worrisome. Food security is no longer guaranteed and Nigerians have continued to raise their voices over the unabating hunger and poverty in the land. Nigerians are living in bondage,'' Comrade Emelieze stated.

The Rule of Law

Image
The survival of democracy depends to a great extent, on the just and efficient working of the courts of law. The people look up to these courts for reprieve against those who interfere with their rights. Through the declaration and application of law, the courts make public in provisions are not subject to the will of an arbitrary, Government, but rather to a known and accepted set of rules . In the present dispensation, the activities of the courts, when it comes to the dispensation of justice in civil and criminal matters, have not met the expectations of the people. The quality of an unspecified number of Magistrates and Justices, who perhaps leave most of the work to their clerks is a discredit to the system. The attitude, competence and integrity of judicial workers is also not a credit to the system. Sadly, the combination of the rule ‘’no wrong without remedy’’, with the Rule of Law, does not protect the citizen from unlawful imprisonment or other injury at the hands of G...

The Need for Good Government

Image
Concerned citizens, who are desirous to sustain the democratic form of government must meticulously understand the policies of dictatorships. In addition, the sections and clauses of the constitution obstructing good governance and the causes of social injustice must be removed. Towards achieving this, the citizens ought to have access to qualitative education that would aid sound judgment, and morally promote interest in and respect for fellow citizens. Indeed, democracy is a system that is least liable to abuse, most capable of adaptation to new needs and most favorable to prosperity. Democracy does not deprive citizens of the use of their faculties, the relations between government and the people and between one citizen and another. Citizens resolve their differences without resorting to violence in sane climes. Furthermore, redundancy of spies becomes prominent and censorship is no longer the focus, when good government is in place.
