Journalist petitions Oyo CJ over aborted eviction from late father’s house

The Editor-in-Chief of The New Federation has petitioned the Chief Judge of Oyo state over a abortive attempt to evict him from his late father’s house at No. 3 Kehinde Aderibigbe street, Olorunsogo, Molete, Ibadan.

The petition titled FACT CHECK and dated 16^th September, 2026 stated, ‘’ The New Federation is an online crime investigative news website. We request to verify if one Mr. Moshood Adekunle is a bailiff of the state judiciary. Mr. Adekunle led some policemen hired thugs smoking Indian hemp at about 5.30 am on Tuesday, 15^th September, 2026 to evict Mr. Solomon Adewunmi from No. 3, Kehinde Aderibigbes street, Olorunsogo, Molete, Ibadan.’’

‘’Take note that before this time, a lawyer, one Mr. Abdulramon Adeoti and Company of No.20 Oluyide street, Sobande Avenue, Oremeji, Mokola, Ibadan.070395973761/08132653307, at about 5.30am in the morning under the cover of darkness, trespassed by sneaking into the above-mentioned address (inherited from late father and apsed a notice. At about 9.00 am in the morning, when I was on my way out of the community, hired thugs attacked me, warning me to pack out of my house immediately of be killed. Interestingly, before this incident, hired thugs had invaded my residence, vandalized installed facilities and looted equipment worth N15 million, he concluded.

Section 383 (Definition of Stealing): Defines stealing as fraudulently taking or converting anything capable of being stolen with the intent to permanently or temporarily deprive the owner of it. [1]

Land and Real Estate: If the property is land or a building taken by force or illegal occupation, it is often prosecuted under specific state laws.

  Oyo State Real Properties Protection Law (prohibits forceful entry, illegal occupation, and land-grabbing).

Section 7(1): States that anyone who, without lawful authority, uses or threatens violence to forcefully take over or grab any real property commits an offense.

Penalties: Conviction can lead to imprisonment for up to 15 years, a fine of ₦500,000, or both.

Additional Provisions: Under the law, having a claim to possession does not justify using force or self-help to take over a property
