Nigerian Prisons are No longer Correctional Centers-Comrade Emelieze

A former chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Oyo state and also the National Coordinator of the All Workers Convergence(AWC) Comrade Andrew Emelieze was remanded in the Agodi Correctional Center, Ibadan, Nigeria by a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Comrade Emelieze was arraigned by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the Federal High Court, on a four-count charge of alleged injurious statement against the Federal Government, threat to protest at Aos Rock and failing to honor the DSS invitation.

Comrade Emelieze  who spent six days in the center, narrates his experience. Excerpts:

Eritrea Arrests Christians Again, Raising Fresh Fears Of Persecution

I was remanded for six days in the Agodi correctional center for failing to meet my bail conditions. The totality of my experience was horrible and equally regrettable. My prison experience has exposed me to the pitiable and sorry state of inmates in the so-called correctional centers in Nigeria.

The prisons are over-congested while there are so many inmates, who have spent several years in prison awaiting trial. To send anyone to prison today is equal to a death sentence. The prisons are no longer correctional centers, but corruption centers.

Fulani Militants Kill Christians In Nigeria As Violence Escalates

The government has committed a crime against humanity, by ensuring that inmates live under such sorry conditions. Indeed, the government must take responsibility for the carnage in our prisons. The prisons are not fit for animals, talk less of human beings.

The government has to grant inmates who have been awaiting trial for several years amnesty as a step towards decongesting the prisons.
