Education in Intensive is Care

The state of primary and secondary school education across the states in Nigeria already in intensive care mode.

Sadly, the private schools which ought to provide soothing balm for distraught parents and guardians, have worsened the rot.

The convincing recruitment of teachers alone, cannot guarantee quality education, when requisite qualifications, state of mind, experience and skills are lacking.

Indeed, learning is impossible in an environment characterized by dilapidated structures and absence of education resources.

However, for the director, Career Development Center, University of Ibadan, Prof. Bayo Oluwole, the lack of professional development for teachers, inadequate infrastructure and overcrowded schools in Oyo state are clogs in the wheels of quality education.

Indeed, a visit to a number of schools in the state validates this argument. Really, trade unions have limitations and those in charge take advantage of these.

Of worry is the focus of the leadership on road and airport projects in the face of the glaring long departure of discipline, law and order in schools.

Interestingly, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comtrade Ismail Raji believes that the employment of over 20,000 teachers in the state by the government has salvaged the disturbing situation in the education sector.

This may be far from the truth, considering the fact that teachers now embrace electronic and social media to expose the rot in the system.

Expectedly, Comrade Raji advises those involved to channel their grievances through their leaders, describing their actions as embarrassing.

The NUT chairman summarizes the present situation of things this way:' while we celebrate our achievements, we must not lose sight of the challenges that persist such as inadequate funding of education (though it is a global phenomenon) infrastructural deficits, and the need for continuous capacity development for teachers. A nation that neglects its teachers has signed its underdevelopment but a nation that honors its teachers secures its future.''
